As many Gmail users have discovered, a number of new AI features have quietly popped into their inbox. Smart Compose finishes your sentences as you type, while Smart Reply offers one-tap response suggestions at the bottom of your emails. Together, they mean Google is constantly analyzing how you write and what you say — essentially doing your thinking for you. Many people aren’t okay with that level of privacy invasion, or with outsourcing their thinking to Google.

While these features have been switched on by default, the good news is you can opt out. Head to Gmail settings via the gear icon in the top right — you’ll need to choose “See all settings” too — then look under the General tab for Smart Compose and Smart Reply and turn them off. There are a number of other “Smart” features worth switching off while you’re there.

One more, called “Help me Write,” needs to be turned off through your Chrome browser; just type chrome://settings/ai/helpMeWrite into the address bar and it’ll take you right to it. For any AI features that still can’t be blocked through settings, a filter on your device can take care of the rest — and the same goes for those AI results that have quietly crept into your Google searches, which you probably never asked for either.

With all that in place, your good old-fashioned email will be restored. Yeah, consumer email is about 30 years old, so “old-fashioned” is indeed appropriate.
