What is a Picture Worth?

AI now allows anyone to create photos, illustrations, and even videos from a simple prompt—whatever the imagination can describe. This has become so widespread that much of the visual content online is now AI-generated. The old saying “a picture is worth a thousand words” has shifted; today, pictures are often made from just a few.

This new power brings both creativity and risk. With little effort, people can generate and share images that demean others or misuse someone’s likeness. What makes this especially concerning is how accessible it is—even basic phones can create, receive, and spread such content quickly.

We’re already seeing the effects. Teens have shared AI-generated images mocking teachers, chipping away at respect in subtle ways. At the same time, trust in reality is weakening—authentic photos and videos are increasingly dismissed as “just AI,” even when they are genuine.

We’re only beginning to understand the long-term impact. As AI reshapes how we see and trust the world, we’ll need to reinforce values like respect, truth, and responsibility—so truth doesn’t get lost in a flood of convincing fakes.
