I run a local teen camp, and my rule is that when counselors are working during camp hours, their cellphones need to be put away. A counselor should never be on her phone during camp time, and of course, she should never show any campers anything on her phone.
I noticed that this rule is a serious challenge for my counselors. They struggle not to take out their phones on bus trips, during activities, and during downtime. It takes strength of character not to give in to the temptation of reaching for their phones at odd times.
After several reminders, my counselors began to conquer their temptation. It was worth the struggle to break their habit of reaching for their phones at every whim. By the end of the summer, some counselors felt empowered by their efforts to hold off and not be a slave to their phones.
